A prototype airsoft AEG system known as the MTO Phantom has made a public appearance after roughly a decade of silence. The technology was last reported during a Victory Show in Japan ten years ago, and had largely faded from public awareness since then, leaving many in the airsoft community to assume the project had been abandoned.
On 10 May, Hobby Shop Kitboy brought a prototype to the Victory Show hosted by Sam's Militarya, displaying what they called a "Gear-Less AEG." According to user Yousunics on Twitter/X, the unit on display uses the MTO Phantom system and delivers a notable shooting feel and recoil response.

Below is a Google translate of the image above:

The MTO Phantom is understood to differ from conventional AEG designs in that it uses fewer components and does not rely on an external tank or gas source. If it operates on electro-magneto-pneumatic propulsion, the closest technical framework observers have been able to apply, it could represent a more efficient method of propelling BBs through the barrel. Some context for the underlying technology can be found in a presentation by Eric Gautier, formerly of BO Manufacture/BO Dynamics at the Airsoft Meetup during IWA Outdoor Classics 2016.
Whether this prototype will move beyond the display stage remains to be seen. The reappearance of the MTO Phantom after years of absence has renewed interest, and the airsoft community will be watching for further developments.
