Will Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Ever Be Released?

Gungho Cowboy

With the Metal Gear Solid Franchise already on its 25th year, making it one of the most successful video game series in history, creator Hideo Kojima, unveiled in August last year that they will be releasing the tenth title in the series. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, will see the Big Boss, also known  as the Naked Snake, return to the game after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots and will be the main Protagonist.

Like the previous Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker,  MGS Ground Zeroes will be running on the Fox Engine, and will be developed for the Sony Playstation and XBox 360. Whilst trailers and videos have been released, there are concerns by the Hideo himself that the game might never be released.

That caused a big gasp for its audience.

Hideo wants to tackle mature issues and taboos in this iteration of MGS. As to what sensitive issues he will tackle this time, we are not sure what this will be and this approach might make his audience uncomfortable, stating in an interview, according to Videogamer:

"Video games as a medium haven't matured very much at all in the last 25 years," explained Kojima at a round table interview conducted today. "It's always about killing aliens and zombies. Not that I don't like those kinds of games... they are fun, but I think games have a long way to go before they can mature.

"Over the past 25 year I have tried to work with the Metal Gear series to introduce more mature themes, but really it hasn't gotten there yet. Compared to movies and books it still has a long way to go.

"That's precisely what I want to try to tackle with Ground Zeroes. Honestly I'm going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky. I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn't sell because it's too much. As a creator I want to take that risk."

In all honesty, with over 25 years of the MGS series, I think we can give Hideo the leeway to take even more risks to tackle taboos in video games. A large portion of the fan base developed over the years are already adults and many already in their middle ages. This is a mature audience that even if the storyline tackles issues that will make them uncomfortable, I believe they will be able to take those if such issues are important to the plot of the story.

If what he creates is a masterpiece of a videogame story on something that may not be of mass appeal and more of putting out the creative energy that may not be to everyone's liking, then I'd still go on to play the game. There have been games that  have been controversial in recent years, but have become as great commercial successes, Hideo can focus on ensuring a tight story for the MGS Ground Zeroes and be damned what others will say.

There will be livecast during the Game Developers' Conference where Hideo Kojima will explain the game development of MGS Ground Zeroes on the Fox Engine which you can watch on Gamespot on the 27th of March.

For a good number of gamers, a firm message that the title will be released is what they will ever need to hear.
