"Video Game High School" Makes Me Want An Airsoft Web Series

Logan

I must be getting old as I cannot catch up with all the gamer terms while watching "Video Game High School (VGHS)", the latest web series in YouTube that relies on the strength of the fan base of Freddie Wong, one of YouTube's superstars. There are attempts to create some compelling video series in YouTube and many have failed, and only just a few have made it. Beat Down Boogie's "Modern War Gear Solid" is definitely in my book, but VGHS is definitely on top of my YouTube Blockbusters.

VGHS also has also proven the crowdfunding can work, as it raised its small budget via Kickstarter, but in the first 5 episodes I've watched, I feel that either they have already gone over the budget, or most of the actors are volunteers, rather than paid ones. If that is the case, then their commitment to the VGHS project is very much commendable.

Freddie Wong is one of the executive producers and directors of VGHS, which follows the journey of Brian D. who dreamt of being a part of this elite high school of videogamers. By chance, he was able to frag ("kill") the top FPS gamer in the world, "Law", on TV and generated worldwide attention, leading to his invitation to be part of VGHS. There he started finding friends and a girl who his heart was after, but who is also the girlfriend of "Law".

The production is really brilliant using YouTube-only standards and for the initial episodes, I find myself reminiscing some video game flicks, with the oldest being "The Last Starfighter" which was released in 1984. While most of the movies about video games are mainly about video games adapted movies, VGHS follows the tradition of "The Last Starfighter" in which it's a movie about a video gamer albeit with the influence of Freddie Wong, which is heavy on comedy. I guess, I will go all the way, and watch all the episodes when they get released.

So where does airsoft have a hand in this? Indeed, it does and again, in the tradition of Freddie Wong videos, VGHS heavily relies of airsoft guns as props for all the FPS game scenes. This is further confirmed by Evike.com as they provided the airsoft stuff used in the series.

It would be nice to find a collaboration among some of the top airsoft video makers on YouTube, and some of the California-based airsoft retailers such as Airsoft GI, Evike.com, Airsoft Megastore, and AirSplat.com do have the good video making capabilities. Airsoft GI actually did a fan movie of "Left 4 Dead" which got a lot of eyeballs but our verdict was "messy." If they can pool their resources and find a writer who can wrap a story about airsoft with no FPS plot, or a fan parody about a movie, then they might just pull something off. The Taiwan movie "War Game 229" was the first big screen movie that fully used airsoft as airsoft, but the story is not about it, it's about a brotherhood of old men nostalgic about their war past.

Here's the video made by Evike.com on the premiere of VGHS followed by the first five episodes. We'll be posting the next episodes in the news section.

So do you agree that an airsoft video series in the tradition of VGHS should be made too?
