RAPID MOHOC: The World's First Military-Optimised Helmet Camera

OptimusPrime

Action Cameras for tactical use are hotting up and we love that there's now intense competition in this area. Big electronic companies and the specialised one such as GoPro, Drift Innovations and Contour are battling over who gets the most market share in the extreme sports market. Even for tactical use, these cameras are now being used for intelligence and documentation purpose. For airsoft, is to capture the skirmish action and posting it on YouTube.

RAPID wants to capture the tactical market by offering their RAPID MOHOC Action Camera which they say is specifically made for the combat market. The shape is made to fit the contour of the ballistic helmet and is mounted on top, giving you an impression of a Mohawk hairstyle, hence the name MOHOC. Frankly, it is just a hump on that reminds me more of a Brachiosaurus rather than a Mohawk.

The premise on why RAPID developed the MOHOC for tactical use is that existing action cameras were not really designed for use in the battlefield and are bulky and prone to snagging. Furthermore, they say that they are not glove-friendly. Still, many of us would beg to differ as action cameras are also made for helmets or be worn by the head. Some are glove friendly such as Contour HD which is easy to operate.  With Wifi-remote, action cams can be controlled via wrist-worn remote control or mobile devices.

What probably is the best selling point of the RAPID MOHOC is that it is military-optimised as compared to the other action cameras which are for any type of extreme sport. It is IP-68 rated meaning that it is dust proof and submersible to about 3 metres of water and does not require for any extra housing for waterproofing or dust protection.  Furthermore, it can give vibration feedback for whilst in use and does not have white light discharge, its lens anti-reflective, with good low-light, and IR capabilty.

The list of features as shown above is impressive and for airsoft players it looks like it is something to be a must-have when many players in the field are using action camera nowadays. You will need an action camera that is optimised for tactical purposes and the RAPID MOHOC can easily fit that requirement. However, many airsoft players would also like to use their action cameras for purposes other than tactical such as for travel, other sports, and mounting them on vehicles too. Unless airsoft players don't mind spending for an action camera that can only be used on a helmet and for airsoft skirmishes, they would rather put their money on the existing commercial action cameras that have already been proven themselves in the field and can provide even better image and video quality.

So far, no pricing has been mentioned at the website and if this will be offered mainly to military organisations or will be made available commercially. The RAPID MOHOC finally launched during the Eurosatory 2014 that will take place in Paris from 16-20 June 2014.
