Product Idea: Video-Ready Protective Eyewear

Gungho Cowboy

Now, this is an idea that should have been made in the recent years, especially for airsoft players and practical shooters. Since nobody has thought about it, then I am now proposing to the prolific manufacturers in Mainland China to read this innovation. Do this, and you might have a good market in the airsoft industry, and even law enforcement or military.

My premise is that soldiers, police people and airsoft players would like lighter loads. Many are also asked to document their actions, especially the police. For airsoft players, the excitement of capturing that moment of an incredible shot during a skirmish and provide it as proof to his/her mates and interested girls (and men) listening to the player's story.

Helmet cams have been seen as an extra load as you'll need to find ways to mount these properly. Whether wired or all-in-ones, these helmet cams are sometimes seen as minor inconveniences and thus, few people on the skirmish field use these.

What I am proposing is to have a DVR eyewear that takes the hassle off in attaching another piece equipment on our bodies. The eyewear is also protective, and the convenience of putting a camera at eye level is better as there's no need to make adjustments to ensure that the camera is pointed in the proper direction.  No need to look into a separate DVR LCD screen; no need for laser alignment tools; and no need to ask your mate to help you align the camera. Just put it on, and you're ready to shoot your video footage to upload to Youtube after the game.

The technology is already available, and all it take is just a change of lens being used. If you check at eBay, there has been a proliferation of DVR Spy Glasses which cost around £15.00 (US$22 as of this writing), and free shipping already included. Most of these are offered by Hong Kong and Mainland China retailers. Good for ordinary day use, but I would not walk in public having this set. It smacks of voyeurism (which was why it was actually made), and of course an invasion of privacy of people.

But for airsoft, that's another story, players would love to view videos of themselves in action, and that's where the honey pot is. However, the lenses these DVR spy glasses themselves do not have proper certification to meet  ANSI Z87.1-2003 or exceeds Ballistic Standard For Spectacles Mil-Prf-31013 to be safely worn by players.

So, my proposal is simple: change the lens! By meeting some standards, and some ACM eyewear being sold online for airsoft players already offer good protection, and it's just a matter of putting these on the DVR spyglass.

If the manufacturers make it into interchangeable lens: with clear, amber, or dark lens options, it would be even better. And they can diversify into other types, mesh-type DVR googles, or even face masks! A sweet price point of US$40-50 as based on the existing features of DVR Spy glasses would be ok. But if a 720p HD version can be made with 32GB microSD card storage, I'm willing to pay up to US$200 for it!

How's that for an idea? I hope the manufacturers are reading this. If you're happy with this suggestion, then we at Popular Airsoft should demand some royalty from this idea. But we'll be happy if you'll send us several pairs for us to review instead of the royalty. :-)
