A Peek At The IDF's Urban Warfare Training Center

Gungho Cowboy

Urban Warfare might sound fun in an airsoft game, but in real life, it is what every commander and soldier would dread to be in. A high-tech military will not easily find advantage in urban combat where their equipment and training might not put into full use. Every corner, every window, every rooftop must be watched, as someone might be waiting with a rifle or a grenade launcher, ready to pop one at you. Casualties go high in Urban Combat.

Perhaps no other military in the world is much experienced in Urban Warfare other than the Israelis. Battling Hamas in the Gaza Strip or Palestinian Militias in the West Bank and the Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Israelis have developed techniques that make them feared in urban warfare.

To train their soldiers and those of allied nations, the IDF put up the Urban Training Warfare Center (UTWC) in the IDF base of Ze'elim. Established in 2006, the UTWC is said to be the largest training urban warfare training centre --- a 41,000 square metre facility with lots of buildings, passages, and underground routes. It is an area that any airsoft player love to go and play in.

The video below gives us a peek of the UTWC, as trainees go against the OPFOR who are experienced Urban Warfare specialists. Not much was shown in the tactics and other equipment employed, perhaps due to security considerations. But definitely, the UTWC plays an important role in the War on Terror or preparing for any Middle Eastern Conflict; and that Tier 1 Units from allied countries have trained against or with the best of Israel here.

It’s a dream game site for an airsoft milsim event. Most definitely some hardcore milsim teams would take up the invite from the IDF to play there. But that will be wishful thinking.
