PSR talks about the Zastava M72B1, a Yugoslavian-designed light machine gun that functions as a companion to the M70 rifle. Unlike its Soviet counterparts, this model was developed independently after Yugoslavia had a falling out with Moscow, leading to unique design choices like a non-chrome-lined barrel and a short, stout handguard originally intended for a quick-change barrel system. It features a stamped receiver with a reinforced trunnion and a distinctive ribbed barrel that serves as a heat sink for sustained firing.
He showcases the firearm equipped with a forced reset trigger, which allows for a high rate of fire while remaining surprisingly controllable. To complete the look, the gun is outfitted with red wood furniture, leather stock wrapping, and a Romanian top-loading drum magazine. PSR notes that while the setup is effectively a sewing machine that rips through ammunition, it does require a bit of lubrication to keep the trigger mechanism happy after several hundred rounds of continuous action.
Shooting the M72B1 is described as a noisy but entertaining experience, with the bipod providing enough stability to keep shots on target even during rapid bursts. He points out that while the gun is built to take plenty of heat and abuse, the current price of ammunition is the only real buzzkill for those looking to mag-dump all day.
