LPVO vs Red Dot vs Both

Josh from Walkers discussing the age-old debate of how to best dress up an AR-15 for a day at the range or a theoretical emergency. He compares two primary setups: a Red Dot paired with a magnifier and a Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO). Both options offer a clear view of the world, but they cater to different philosophies of how much tube a shooter wants to stare through while trying to look cool.
The Red Dot and magnifier combo is presented as the speedster of the group, ideal for those who prefer a large window and a simple ring for quick target acquisition. It is a solid choice for home defense or competition bays where targets are close enough to see their facial expressions. However, it lacks flexibility in magnification; you are stuck with either no zoom or a specific preset, which is a bit like having a car that only goes 20 or 60 miles per hour with no in-between.
On the other hand, the LPVO is the preferred tool for mid-range distances, especially when most of your shots are at targets that require a bit more squinting. While it offers more zoom options, it can feel like looking through a straw compared to the wide-open Red Dot, which might slow down your transitions if you aren’t careful. To have the best of both worlds, Josh even suggests sticking a tiny Red Dot on the side of the scope, because in the world of gear, more is usually more.
