Metal Gear was first released on July 13, 1987 for the MSX2 computer. Designed by Hideo Kojima for Konami, it was first released in Japan and Europe and a modified version for the Nintendo NES (Family Computer) was later released later that year.

It is the success of Metal Gear Solid, which was released in 1998 for the Sony Playtstation did the game exploded into a series of game titles. Over the next years until there were remakes for the various game platforms and sequels to the game as well as turned-based game titles. Whilst there many titles released, there were nine major games that were designed by Hideo Kojima with his Kojima Productions, with the last being Phantom Pain in 2015. Kojima then split from Konima after that to become an independent game studio.

According to SVG, two of the game tittles "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" and "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" are being prepared to be returned after they were pulled from online game stores in November 2021.  The reason stated on why they were pulled was that they used historical footage.

We don’t know if there are plans by Konami of porting the old games to newer consoles.
