Kuba_T1000 Strikes Again: AEG To HPA Conversion Project

OptimusPrime

Do I  still need to make introductions about Kuba_T1000? Sounds like another robot model from the Terminator movies, but for many who are into airsoft DIY, Kuba_T1000 is well known for his DIY M134 Minigun which we wrote about here last year. Now, he has a another project, and again is willing to share to you how it's done.

Kuba_T1000 sent an email last Saturday that he made an airsoft AEG to HPA mod. This means that you can readily change your airsoft gun from an AEG into using HPA as a power source. Whilst HPA is not a new technology for airsoft, nowadays, if you want to use HPA, either you get a dedicated airsoft gun that can use it, just like airsoft gas blowback guns. It would be great if you can readily change power sources for airsoft gun, rather than buying the same model of an airsoft gun, but getting three versions of it: AEG, Gas Blowback, and HPA).

When Kuba_T1000 sent in the news, the first thing that came to my mind is: PolarStar Airsoft clone! However, Kuba_T1000, who is based in Poland, can also make his own airsoft build from scratch and what's even better he provides the blueprint online so anyone interested in building one can download his specs and tutorials rather than waiting for Kuba_T1000 to build and sell one for you. PolarStar Airsoft sell their own AEG to HPA kit, but the plans are not available for download.

So why do such a project? Kuba_T1000 says:

"There is many advantages. For me the most important is to eliminate motor’s sound. Also regulation RPS and FPS is very easy, and you don’t have to buy many upgrade – springs, pistons, motors, and batteries. All what you need to do is just adjusting one potentiometer to control ROF, and adjusting pressure to control velocity of BB."

Fair enough. Airsoft is expensive hobby and if anything that can be done to control costs in maintaining such a hobby, his mod would be one good alternative.

I haven't tried the PolarStar Airsoft product, neither does Kuba_T1000. He says that it's similar to PolarStar in principle, but the approach may be different. Kuba_T1000 uses solenoid to control air-flow. Also, the selling points according to him are more simplicity in design, which will then make the price lower, and all the information to make your own is provided for free by Kuba_T1000.

The AEG to HPA mod is not completely free of electronics as you need to have an electronic timer to control the solenoid valve. The control unit can be used to control the ROF of the airsoft gun, while the HPA is the power source and increase the power/fps which you can hit over 400fps. At least you don't need to do a spring change to meet the velocity requirements of any airsoft game that you want to go to.

Kuba_T1000 says that it's still a work in progress, with the priority of building a demo unit that he can use to get feedback from some testers. If feedback is very positive, he'll initially make a few units to be available in Poland.

If you cannot wait for him to finish the units, then you might as well go to his website, download the plans, and make one for yourself. Kuba_T1000 would be more than happy to hear your feedback on the designs.
