KAC's "Bullet Flight" Turns Your Smartphone Into A Ballistic Computer

Aaaahhh!!! The wonders of smartphone technlogy. You can almost do anything with your smartphone nowadays --- checking your emails, playing games, do navigation, set reminders, text friends, shop online, tweet, connect via Facebook, and of course, make phone calls. Too bad it can't still walk your dog out or cook for you.

As for gun enthusiasts, airsofters included, that are already apps available such as gun database, an FPS calculator, price comparison and more. Now, Knight's Armament Company gets into the smartphone app business with its "Bullet Flight" which was made by Runaway Technology Inc., which turns your smartphone into a ballistic computer. Now you can toss your ballistic computer away, or cancel plans in buying one. Just get the app online and install it on your smartphone, provided that it's either an iOS (iPhone) or an Android smartphone.

Bullet Flight is a quick solution for shooters in the field as it gives a solution immediately to give you that shot. You can input various conditions into the app sich as temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and angles to the tarhet with the accelerometer.

For now the app has profiles of the M110 precision rifle and various KAC rifles. It doesn't have yet profiles of non-KAC rifles in the database, but you cannot count on it unless KAC allows it you to create profiles of other rifles that they don't manufacture. For now, they have 5 KAC rifle profiles apart from the US Army'S M110.

There are three types of Bullet Flight apps, which are described below:

BulletFlight L1 - the ballistic computer

This is for BulletFlight L1. There are also Level-2 and M (BulletFlight Military) versions of this app. Level-2 adds a full calculation screen where you may enter exact range and atmospheric details, the ability to generate a range-card, cosine-angle calculation, GPS functionality to get your location and download local weather information, a mil-dot range estimation feature, and the ability to use non-standard weather conditions in the calculation. Further, Level-2 and above shows impact energy, velocity, and flight time - but only on the full-calculation screen or range-card.

BulletFlight Level-M (Military) version further adds the ability to calculate an actual BC based on bullet drop, two velocities, or flight time. The ability to calculate bullet stability. Bullet spin drift is added to the computation, and the Coriolis effect (Earth’s rotation) may be factored in.

Knight's Armament BulletFlight L1 is a ballistic computer that provides quick solutions in the field. BulletFlight does not output information in table format but rather dynamically gives you the solution you need now to make that shot. The app provides detailed solutions out to 3000 meters. Your weapon profile includes your scope MOA/mRad per click, and hence when you provide a range to the target, the app will simply show how many clicks you need to change the scope by for that range and wind speed.

Up to five ballistic coefficients with corresponding velocity thresholds may be used for each profile to enhance accuracy, or use a single G1, G7, or G8 value.

Several built-in profiles for the Army's M110 semi-automatic precision rifle, the 14.5 inch SR16 rifle, The 50 BMG M107, .308 M40A3, .308 M24, and the 6.5mm KAC PDW allow you to get started quickly. You may alter these profiles, or add new ones.

This app is currently in combat use by military snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Wind speed may be specified in either miles-per-hour or meters-per-second.
  • Sight-in weather may be logged and stored for automatic normalization to standard conditions. So you may sight in at any temperature or altitude and later be accurate at any other temperature or altitude.
  • Built-in help screen.

Too bad they cannot be of use in airsoft shooting given its limitations. For now, we'll have to content ourselves with the existing FPS calculators and an additional airsoft guns database for this.

However, if you are real steel KAC user too, you can use this. And when doing some shooting, you can listen to your favourite music in your smartphone. But if you're deployed in the battlefield, just make sure that you any incoming phone call or SMS message won't make you miss that shot.

At the Android App Market Bullet Flight L1 costs £2.42, the L2 £7.27, while the Military Grade version is £18.18. You can just buy the L1 to play around in using a ballistic calculator, but if you have a KAC rifle, then lock, load and compute.
