Halo: Combat Evolved

Airsoft players who also happen to be Halo devotees, it's time to dust off your Snow Wolf BC-88 AEGs, because Xbox Game Studios and Halo Studios have just lobbed a plasma grenade directly into your weekend plans. “Halo: Campaign Evolved” which isa full-scale remake of the legendary “Halo: Combat Evolved” campaign is officially launching on July 28, 2026. Launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via both Steam and the Microsoft Store, this is as platform-agnostic as a Covenant artillery strike. And yes, in keeping with the beautiful tradition of Microsoft not making you sell a kidney to play their biggest titles (*snicker*), it will be available on Game Pass on day one. Wallets, consider yourselves warned.

Before anyone starts muttering darkly about "lazy remasters" and "cash grabs," pump the brakes, this is emphatically not that. “Halo: Campaign Evolved” has been completely rebuilt with high-definition visuals, enhanced cinematics, and refined gameplay, taking the original experience and dragging it kicking and screaming into 2026 without losing a single frame of its soul. The core is still all there: the crash landing, the ancient ringworld, the overwhelming Covenant hordes, and that one haunting piano note that has lived rent-free in your brain since 2001. But the developers weren't content to just slap a fresh coat of paint on a classic. They went ahead and added an entirely new three-mission story arc called “Operation: METEORITE”, included with every single edition of the game, because apparently they felt like being generous.

Set one year before the events of “Halo: Combat Evolved”, Operation: METEORITE follows the Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson as they infiltrate a Covenant agricultural ship holding orbit over the glassed human colony of Promise, searching for data that could lead to the Covenant's fabled homeworld of High Charity. If that sentence didn't immediately trigger a Pavlovian response involving an urge to pick up a controller, we need to talk. The premise sounds deceptively tidy — a quick smash-and-grab behind enemy lines alongside everyone's favorite cigar-chomping sergeant. In the Halo universe, of course, that's practically a signed contract guaranteeing something will go catastrophically sideways. Over the course of three action-packed missions, the duo must battle Sacristan warriors, liberate UNSC marines, and brave a series of bizarre experiments conducted under the watchful gaze of the mysterious San'Shyuum Minister of Harmony. So: bad odds, big guns, and Sergeant Johnson being magnificently Sergeant Johnson. Classic.

To make sure this narrative expansion didn't drift into fan-fiction territory, Halo Studios made the smart call of bringing in a heavyweight. The “Halo: Hungry Buzzards” digital short story, written by acclaimed Halo novelist Troy Denning, serves as a direct narrative lead-in to the METEORITE missions and his deeper involvement across the project ensures the whole thing feels like it actually belongs in the canon rather than bolted on as an afterthought. His track record with the franchise means the gritty, boots-on-the-ground military texture that long-time fans have come to love is fully intact. Fresh environments, wild new enemy variants, and an expanded arsenal featuring all the iconic weaponry of “Halo: Combat Evolved” plus nine additional armaments from across the Halo series round out a package that should satisfy both the lore purists and the players who just want to dual-wield something unnecessarily powerful.

Speaking of expanded arsenals, the sandbox as a whole has received a meaningful overhaul. Enhanced mobility and targeting bring sharper combat to familiar fights, while beloved fan-favorite weapons like the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle all make their debut in the missions of “Halo: Combat Evolved” for the first time. The vehicular carnage has also been upgraded accordingly. Players can now hijack enemy vehicles, fit four full Spartans into one Warthog, or take the fight to longer ranges from behind the wheel of a Covenant Wraith tank. And for those who enjoy a little chaos on top of their chaos, the all-new Campaign Remix mode randomizes missions with new enemies, new weapons, new visibility effects, and the most gameplay-modifying Skulls of any Halo campaign to date. Replayability, consider yourself maximized.

For those already reaching for their credit cards, pre-orders are live right now across all platforms. Pre-ordering any edition of the game nets you the Foundry Armory Pack, which is essentially a nostalgia syringe delivered directly to the cortex. It features exclusive armor and weapon skins inspired by the Master Chief's iconic look and signature weapon from the original “Halo: Combat Evolved,” alongside legendary new skins celebrating 25 years of Halo. The classic blocky 2001 aesthetic alongside modern "Gilded Onyx" variants means you can choose between looking historically accurate or looking like you raided a very expensive trophy case. Either way, those Grunts are not going to know what hit them.

For the budget-conscious space marine, the Standard Edition comes in at a sensible $49.99. This is the no-frills, get-me-to-the-ring tier which is the full base game featuring the remastered 10-mission original campaign plus the three Operation: METEORITE missions, all without any additional digital clutter accumulating in your library. It's the perfect option for the player whose only goal is to save all sentient life in the galaxy on a Friday night before bed. If, however, you have slightly deeper pockets and a taste for prestige, the Digital Premium Edition at $69.99 unlocks some serious advantages. It includes up to five days of early access starting July 23, 2026, meaning you can finish the fight before your friends have even pressed start, plus the Alpha Halo Armory Pack containing six exclusive weapon skins and five Master Chief armor skins, the “Art of Halo: Campaign Evolved” digital artbook, and a digital game manual based on the original “Halo: Combat Evolved” manual.

For the collectors who long ago made peace with the fact that minimalism was never going to be their thing, the Collector's Edition at $199.99 is the ultimate deployment package. It includes a limited-edition 12-inch Dark Horse Master Chief statue, a Collectible Steelbook, three 11x17-inch concept art prints, a physical game manual modeled on the original “Halo: Combat Evolved” manual, and an LED replica of Cortana's data chip because of course it does. Being able to hold a glowing, palm-sized representation of humanity's most important AI construct is the kind of tactile experience no streaming service can replicate. The Collector's Edition is available in limited supply, so pre-ordering now is the only way to guarantee you lock in the Foundry Armory Pack and the five days of early access starting July 23. Those who wait may find only empty shelves and regret.

If you're going in lean with the Standard Edition or going all-in with a statue that will absolutely become the centerpiece of your shelf, the countdown to July 28, 2026 is on. Fans can head to HaloWaypoint or their preferred digital storefront to pre-order now. Twenty-five years after a ringed alien superstructure changed gaming forever, the Master Chief is suiting back up and this time, “everything” looks considerably better in 4K. Charge your shields, stock your plasma grenades, and try to act cool. We're going back to Halo.
