Fifth Graders Design "Heads Up Helmet" For The US Army

Gungho Cowboy

Now, these are kids you would love to have, rather doing some unproductive stuff or just bullying other kids, or doing some auto-tuned MTV to upload at YouTube, these Virginia Fifth Graders rather went on a mission of their own, developing an impressive helmet protection system designed to protect US Army soldiers in the battlefield.

Taking ideas on head protection and doing further research, the kids developed the "Heads Up" helmet whilst the prototype looks not as striking as existing helmets, but it is minimalistic which means reduced weight. It has a visor to for facial protection and ear covers to, well, protect the ears.

Their additional innovations are the inclusion of shock absorbing gel and an airbag which is a collar around the neck and when it feels the heat or pressure, it will then inflate. Perhaps this when a soldier hits the ground due to a strong force by blast or ballistic hit and the airbag prevents traumatic injuries by deploying before the soldier hits the ground or any hard surface.

Their design has been impressive enough to get President Obama's attention. As to this helmet having a future among companies interested in taking their design to the next level? We don't know yet, but one thing's for sure --- these kids have something in their CV that will attract the attention of companies in the future.

We need more of these kids, whether designing for the armed forces, or something beneficial for mankind.
