Facepalm: Boy Suspended For Using Hand As Gun In "Cops & Robbers" Game

Gungho Cowboy

We've been hearing about overzealous schools and over reacting people with regards to replica guns, but this story really takes the cake. According to the Independent, a Florida school suspended an 8-year old boy for using his hand as a "gun" in a game of "cops and robbers" with friends whilst at school. The reason for the school for that hand gesture as an "act of violence."

Whilst I may not be fan of too much guns in culture, this incident just made my jaw dropped. Perplexed, annoyed, and perhaps appalled that my and perhaps a million others' intelligence has been insulted by such reasoning. And coming from a school which should have some common sense to be considered as a great learning place, it just really is a big insult.

The "mass shooting in schools" card will be raised here. We all understand that, but suspending a kid for a game of "cops and robbers" where pretty much every boy and girl in the world knows that hands will be used as "guns" in the game. It is just beyond belief.

If you, our dear reader, are at a loss for words, then I don't blame you.

I do agree with the boys' mother that there are lots of ways to explain to the him and his playmates that guns may be dangerous to them. But the problem is, most of households with kids will be guilty of condoning "acts of violence" when we allow children in the neighbourhood play "cops and robbers." When we were in school, our teachers would just watch us with amusement as they see that the pretend game is also simple lesson of the importance of being a law-abiding citizen in society and breaking the law would have the cops coming for you.

This is just crazy. There was no harm done in the game, perhaps maybe a little bit tasteless in this age where Sandy Hook and Columbine are always in the minds of people all across the USA. But for an 8-year old to be suspended for what everybody would not think to be a misdemeanor, the school may just be inflicting mental harm of the child. It would have been best to just put a stop to the game and explain to them why they do not want any talk or symbols of guns in school.

But for me, as a parent, I would not put my child in a school which does not practice common sense.
