Chinese "Glorious Mission" Video Game Update Set In Disputed Islands

Logan

The latest version of the Chinese PLA recruitment tool which is a free video game called "Glorious Mission" has as enemies the Japanese in what seems to be feeding the nationalist fervor in China in their dispute with the Senkaku Islands (the Chinese call them "Daioyu" Islands).  The first version which was launched in 2011 has the PLA go against the American "Bad Guys."

If you know about the U.S. Army's video game "America's Army" which was developed as a recruitment tool, "Glorious Mission" is the same.

As a DLC (Downloadable Content), the Chinese gamers can launch an attack on the islands and after capturing it, be able to defend against attempts by the JSDF (Japan Self Defense Forces) to recapture them. Since it's a recruitment tool, it is more geared towards promoting the PLA being the good guys and with this new DLC, also heightens nationalist awareness on the disputed islands.

The detailing of the weaponry and gear of the PLA in Glorious Mission is faithful, and in its promotion to further create a formidable Blue Water Navy, the Chinese Airsoft Carrier, Liaoning, is seen in action launching air strikes as the PLA Navy lay siege to the islands. With the Chinese still remembering the atrocities of the Japanese Imperial Army during the 2nd Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945 (one of the big theatres in Asia during World War II), there was a DLC where Chinese players are set in 1937 to fight against the Japanese invaders. This Diaoyu island DLC is an update to pit the players against the Japanese "occupiers" of the islands.

The DLC was made available on the 1st of August, on the 86th Anniversary of the PLA, and over 2 million have download the content. It seems to be a successful propaganda and recruitment tool though we assume that the Japanese are not amused with it given the rising tensions between the two powers over the islands.
