Call of Duty: Black Ops goes 3D

Gungho Cowboy

It's autumn and it will be getting colder and colder, with fewer of us venturing outside to play airsoft, especially when it gets freezing out in the woodlands. We either try to find the nearest indoor airsoft games, or stay at home and play first person shooter games. Activision and Treyarch, the developer that took over from Infinity Ward the development of the Call of Duty Series, plan to exploit this by timing the release of the next installment of Call of Duty. Call of Duty: Black Ops is set to be released next month.

What is getting gamers all over the world excited about is that Call of Duty: Black Ops will be 3D ready. Blame it on James Cameron's "Avatar" movie, 3D is the biggest thing, if not the biggest hype this year as more 3D movies are coming out, and television manufacturers releasing 3D TVs and displays to accommodate new titles that have the 3D label.

The COD Black Ops is said to bring immersive gameplay in a first person shooter, getting that heart pumped up and the weapons and movements are just so surreal. If this is the closest thing to a real battlefield inside the living room, then COD Black Ops is something that airsoft players would grab from the game stores' shelves upon its release. I have already made a pre-order myself, even if I was extremely disappointed with the multiplayer version of the last title, COD Modern Warfare 2.

Here's a video of a beta tester playing the 3D experience of COD Black Ops:

Well, that's a fascinating experience with 3D gaming. ;) There's no video available yet since capturing the 3D experience on video and put it online is something else. So we'll settle with this interview uploaded by GameProVideos at Youtube:

To experience this will set you back more than the £29.99 pre-order price as you'll need to buy 3D-ready HDTVs and gaming PC displays (plus the glasses, and the NVDIA 3D Graphics Card). So with the price of 3D TVs still sky high, then you better not spend your salary for the next 2 or 3 months and put a 3D TV or a 3D gaming PC/laptop at the top of your Christmas shopping list. You'll have a tough choice in the last part of the year, a 3D TV or that lovely but expensive airsoft gun you've been wanting to have.

But one thing's for sure: TV and PC makers would be more than happy to take your money for that 3D experience.

As much as the 3D TV would surely give you that fantastic gaming experience with COD Black Ops and all those new content being made for such appliances, there is also the health issues with prolonged 3D viewing. The refresh rates of existing active 3D viewing glasses can give you some disorientation as based on my experience. There have been health warnings for certain people at risk and for the general viewing population. The first thing is eye strain, and another is fatigue. And gamers stay glued to their displays, sometimes foregoing meals and sleep deprivation.

If you're a parent, better instill some strict schedules for 3D viewing by ensuring that there are proper breaks for the children. If you're an adult, then some self-discipline is required. 3D viewing is just growing, even if it's already an old thing. Until 3D viewing glasses and displays are improved to avoid these problems, it is best to watch 3D with some breaks in between.

I would play COD Black Ops in 2D for now and wait and see how the 3D gaming experiences of others are reported. Besides, I don't have a budget yet for a 3D TV. I know it sucks, but it's better to wait until the prices come down as more and more manufacturers release their own 3D TVs.
