Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 PC Edition Gets Dedicated Servers

Now that's what I call listening to their PC customers. Ever since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 eliminated dedicated servers in favour of Peer-to-Peer IWNET, PC gamers of the Call of Duty series dwindled in numbers. Even if there were more sold for the Xbox 360, Call of Duty owes it to PC Gamers since they're the ones who have patronised and made popular the series ever since it started.

Whilst Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had dedicated servers, these were for unranked games only. This time Treyarch confirmed that Black Ops 2 will have ranked dedicated servers to the joy of PC Gamers. It took almost two years and over 250,000 signatures for a petition from the CoD community for the game developers to finally agree to it. Call of Duty's main rival, Battlefield, had dedicated servers, earning them the affection and cash of PC Gamers.

Admittedly, whilst I am PC Gamer, we are outnumbered by console gamers with the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 selling almost 1.5 million copies versus the 14 million copies that were sold for the Xbox 360 platform. However, PC gaming gets the most advantage with dedicated servers and at the same time such availability will allow moderators able to minimise cheating, a problem that has been plaguing the COD series which was hard to really police with Peer to Peer gaming. Players can choose which server to play on, dependent of network latency, the faster the ping times for them, even better, and dedicated servers often provide smoother game experience.

Furthermore, dedicated servers can allow more players in a given game, as compared to Peer to Peer which chooses the game for you and also limited in the number of players allowed as it will be dependent on the host's connection, which is usually the gamer chosen by the network.

It'll be a great year as there will be two big game titles going head to head before the year ends: Medal of Honor Warfighter and COD Black Ops 2. Whatever, both of these will get my money and I just hope both will satisfy my single player campaign and online multiplayer needs.
