In a move that is based on a mainstay weapon since the 1960s, the United States Marine Corps is poised to bolster its combat capabilities with the latest addition to its armory: the M72 Light Assault Weapon Fire from Enclosure (FFE). This system, unveiled by the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), promises to provide Marines with a decisive advantage in the most intense combat environments.

The M72 FFE initiative can be traced back to 2020, marking a strategic development in military weaponry. The MCSC's call for innovation culminated in December 2021 with Nammo Defense Systems securing a substantial contract worth $498 million to produce the M72 FFE variants. The eagerly anticipated deployment of this new armament is slated for later this year, signaling a transformative phase in military operations.

As for the projectiles to be used with the M72 FFE, there are two distinct variants tailored for specific combat roles: the M72A8 anti-armor and the M72A10 multi-purpose, anti-structure munition. The former is equipped with a potent high-explosive charge warhead, adept at breaching enemy armor, while the latter enhances the Marines' ability to obliterate hostile structures, thereby expanding their tactical repertoire.

Being an updated system that has been in use since the Vietnam War, the M72 FFE is engineered with an upgraded launcher featuring a more intuitive trigger mechanism and a redesigned sling for superior maneuverability. Its groundbreaking capability to facilitate multiple discharges from confined spaces, such as buildings or bunkers, confers a pivotal tactical edge, particularly in urban warfare.

The M72 FFE's design prioritizes both efficacy and safety, offering Marines a lethal tool that mitigates collateral risks. It generates significantly less flash and backblast than the conventional M9 pistol, thereby reducing the likelihood of harm to both the operator and adjacent personnel.

“This new capability removes the Marine from exposure to enemy engagement by introducing the FFE capability, said Mr. Scott Adams, Product Manager, Ammo.

“The FFE and the reduced thermal signature provides the Marine with an added layer of protection.”

The introduction of the M72 FFE complements and augments the existing suite of M72 munitions within the Marine Corps' inventory, including the M72A7 anti-armor and M72A9 anti-structure systems. These established munitions are also set to benefit from the same ergonomic enhancements, ensuring a uniform upgrade in weapon handling across the board.

Procuring the M72 FFE is the result of the effective collaboration between the Marine Corps and the Army. The ammunition supply for the M72 FFE is managed by the U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command, a move that allows both military divisions to benefit from economies of scale and realize cost savings.

The M72 FFE represents the Marine Corps' steadfast commitment to arming its troops with lighter, yet more powerful weapons. As this advanced system becomes part of the Marines' weaponry, it is expected to significantly enhance their battlefield prowess, especially in situations that require swift and resolute responses.
