PSR makes a comparison between a $400 airsoft clone of the MAWL laser, manufactured by Spec Precision, and the authentic $3,700 civilian MAWL C1+ from B.E. Meyers. He first examines the physical differences, noting that the real MAWL boasts superior construction, including a steel mounting solution, better tactile feel on the switches, and more durable materials. The process for accessing the full-power mode is also smoother and easier to execute with one hand on the authentic device.
During night vision testing, however, the clone surprisingly outperforms the civilian MAWL in terms of raw brightness for both the IR illuminator and the laser, as it is not subject to the same laser power regulations. While the real MAWL offers a tighter, more focused beam pattern, the clone proves effective up to approximately 300 yards.
PSR concludes that while the authentic MAWL is superior in durability and ergonomics, the clone is a viable, budget-friendly option for airsoft use or for users who want to experience the MAWL's form factor before committing to the significantly more expensive real device. He also stresses the importance of supporting the American business that developed the original product.
