Kalashnikov Concern, the renowned Russian arms manufacturer, has recently declared the dispatch of a fresh batch of upgraded AK-12 assault rifles. These rifles represent the 2023 model of the AK-12, incorporating valuable insights gleaned from real-world combat experience.

The original AK-12, introduced in 2018, saw active service with the Russian military. Feedback from troops in the field, particularly those deployed in the Northern Military District, highlighted areas for improvement. Kalashnikov's design and engineering teams diligently addressed this feedback, resulting in the latest iteration of the rifle.

The official unveiling of the 2023 model of the AK-12 occurred on 26 May 2023, at the Kalashnikov Concern shooting centre inside the Patriot Park near Moscow. The new model reflects the requirements outlined by the Russian Ministry of Defense, formulated based on the ongoing military operation in Ukraine.

Several key visual changes distinguish the 2023 AK-12. The most noticeable alteration is the non-removable flash suppressor-compensator, designed to enhance handling and stability. Additionally, the firing mechanism now features a two-position safety switch for improved user control.

Iron sights have also received upgrades for better versatility. The reversible rear sight boasts different-sized apertures, enhancing low-light aiming. Furthermore, a lifting cheek piece allows comfortable use with optical or night vision sights. The receiver cover mounting system and forend design have undergone revisions to improve functionality. Notably, the two-round burst mode has been eliminated in favour of a simpler firing system.

“The Kalashnikov Concern regularly receives feedback from the SVO zone regarding the AK-12 assault rifle. The customer’s specialists promptly prepare changes to the technical specifications for the product and submit them to the enterprise for execution. So, the work to improve it does not stop for a day or an hour. We are increasing its effectiveness and, thereby, helping our soldiers successfully complete combat missions and survive,” commented Alan Lushnikov, president of the Kalashnikov concern.

Beyond aesthetics, the 2023 AK-12 boasts significant technological advancements. These modifications result in a lighter weapon that adheres to modern ergonomic standards, enhancing comfort and ease of use in combat situations.
