USCM M56 Smart Gun Gets An Airsoft Version The DIY Way

Gungho Cowboy

Hyperdouraku announced the winners of the Hyperdouraku Custom Guns Contest 2011 last 19 September. All of the custom guns have nice photos taken of them, and the winners of the various categories are shown at the winners page. However, one custom gun, albeit not a winner, has taken our attention. I am pretty much sure the "Aliens" movie fans would surely want this, as it's a working DIY M56 Smart Gun.

For those who are not aware of this, especially those not born in the 1980s, the M56 Smart Gun was the support weapon used by the US Colonial Marines in the movie "Aliens". It fires at 1,200 rounds per minute and it can be guided with its own smart system which is an IR tracking system and with a head mounted goggle system. It was heavy that it has its own harness to assist the operator in carrying it and provide stability. The harness as it's connected to the target system, guides the operator to the target, making it easy to shoot. It's every sci-fi fan's dream and something that even real world armies would love to have it becomes a reality.

It's a movie gun though. According to IMFDB.org the M56 Smart Gun movie prop is actually an MG42 modified to look like a futuristic weapon and the harness is a Steadicam harness, which is used by cameramen to stabilize their camera during movement.

The airsoft version is a crude replica of the M56 Smart Gun. Made by Gunsmith Satoshi, it uses a P90 AEG as donor gun and the rest of the body is made of ABS. It weighs 5kg with battery and magazine and the length is 1,336mm. It has a round counter and fires at an average 25-26 rounds per second with 9.9v1600 LiFe batteries at 90m/s or around 295 fps. You can use standard M4/M16 AEG magazines, but you would always be winding it in an awkward position so an electric winding drum magazine is recommended as you can operate the winding with the console on the left.

According to the description, it has a built-in motion sensor though we didn't find it in the video, as it's more a red laser light which is sighted well when made. However, you cannot use laser as it's banned at skirmish sites, so targetting is basically watching the trajectory of BBs.

The DIY M56 Smart Gun AEG does not have a harness or you can mount it when you have your own steadicam harness, which is a lot of dollars in cost, more expensive than a minigun AEG.

Well at least the airsoft USCM M4A1 Pulse Rifle won't get lonely, even if it has DIY companion. Watch the video of the airsoft M56 Smart Gun below. Enjoy!
