I used an air brush for this, but as long as you are careful, no reason you can't use spray cans, all is explained in the video; but by removing paint from spray cans, and using fairly inexpensive airbrushes (a high end model isn't required for this type of thing) you can get a finer job, more easily.

'Pot Metal' can be hard to get any sort of durable paint job on, what I do here is just one approach that gets as good a bite into the surface as its likely to get.
