Here Comes Mrs. Smith

OptimusPrime

You might be expecting Angelina Jolie. But no, sorry guys, someone better since this lady plays airsoft, and Angelina Jolie doesn't.  A small but terrible airsofter, she's good at pistol games, and was even a Citizens Army Training Officer (CAT) in seconday school in the Philippines. She is actually single, but is engaged with her Mr. Smith, so that "Mrs" title will become a reality soon. Her name's Allaine (a boy's name), but she's known as Mrs. Smith at the Action Games League (AGL).

So, in our second feature in our Women In Airsoft series, it's an honour for us to present to you Allaine, aka "Mrs. Smith". We have to put her up late at night to answer our interview questions, and she's been very patient with us. Even with our joking about her AEG being as tall as her during our chat session in preparation for the interview, she took things in stride.

.

PopularAirsoft: Hi Allaine, can you tell us more about yourself in your own terms?

Allaine:Well, my complete name is Allaine Joanne C. Zagala. Allaine is actually a guy’s name so my dad decided to add Joanne so that it would sound lady-like. As a child I was so into guns, either water gun or springer pellet guns, that made my dad a bit furious because I’m the first girl in the family. By the way, I have 2 older brothers, then me then a younger brother then 2 younger sisters. To divert my attention from guns, my dad enrolled me to gymnastics when I was 3 years old. I was an athlete until age 12.

PopularAirsoft: What made you start with airsoft? And how long have you been playing airsoft?

Allaine: I was introduced to airsoft a year and a half ago by my boyfriend’s officemate, but I was still studying back then so I had to push it aside for the mean time. A few days after the Philippine Nursing Licensure Exams, I started playing again. I could say that I’ve just been playing for 6 months.

PopularAirsoft: And how do you find airsoft as a hobby or sport?

Allaine: For me, I consider airsoft as more of a hobby. Being an athlete before, I still can’t consider airsoft as a sport. It lacks training and discipline for both players (that’s why there are players that others call Zombies) and judges (some judges/marshals bend the rules for their friends) alike.

But I know that one day, airsoft will be considered a sport. We just have to fix a few things for it to be considered as one. For one, I think we need one standard set of rules and strict implementation of it just like in any other sport.

PopularAirsoft: Are you the only one playing airsoft in your family?

Allaine: Right now, yes, I’m the only one in my family who plays airsoft. Well, my brothers and sisters are either working or studying, so they have to focus there first, although sometimes I take them with me during semestral break or holidays to play airsoft and they really enjoy it too.

PopularAirsoft: Tell us about your existing airsoft loadout. Any preferred airsoft gun and loadout and why?

Allaine: Protective gears: flakjak goggles, sprinto polycarbonate shades, 1 full face mask china made, 2 half face balaclava, mole vest, 1 set of knee pads and elbow pads and 2 sniper’s veil.

*I still don’t have any gloves; all the gloves in the market are too big for my small hands. I hope they make smaller sizes for women. =)

BDU’s: Acupat, Digital Jungle Stalker

Guns: TM Colt M1911, TM Hi capa 5.1, A&K M4 RIS customized

I love my TM Colt M1911. I prefer pistol games because you have limited BB’s. You wouldn’t shoot what you cannot see; and it’s a good practice for accuracy.

PopularAirsoft: What is your profession? How do you find your profession?

Allaine: I’m a registered nurse. It’s exciting and interesting. You get to learn new things everyday. The only scary thing about it is that you are handling lives and that a single mistake may cause a patient his life.

I have just graduated from college last April and took up the June Board Exams for Nurses, and luckily, I passed. I am currently unemployed and still waiting for my license. Hopefully I can start working by January.

I also find it very useful in airsoft. I have the knowledge and skills to attend to injured players and give them first aid.

PopularAirsoft: You are with Team Pistoleros which is with the Action Games League (AGL), can you tell us more about your group?

Allaine: I’m not a member of the Los Pistoleros, I just play with them. Their game site is CQB and female friendly, they set their fps limit to 300, and the rules are strictly enforced there.

I am a member of AGL. AGL is an umbrella organization home to a number of sub groups like the Los Pistoleros. Its is the first airsoft organization in the Philippines. It started in 1985. It’s kinda cool to join a group that existed before I was born. That’s why we blaze the trail… others just follow.

PopularAirsoft: What do you think of males playing airsoft? Do you see them as MEN? Or as BOYS?

Allaine: Well, it depends on their character as a player. Those who refuse to declare hits and those who cheat in the games are little immature boys for me; they keep bending the rules to achieve their desired outcome. While on the other hand, those airsofters who are honest and obey the rules of the game are the true gentlemen in my eyes.

It’s not the number of BB’s that hit you or the pain that you can withstand (Zombies can withstand pain that’s why they don’t call their hits) that determines if you’re a man or a boy, it’s your honesty and discipline as a player.

PopularAirsoft: Tell us your most memorable airsoft skirmish that you've been to. What was it?

Allaine: That would be the first day that I played airsoft. I played the whole day and didn’t get hit until the last game. It was the first time I got hit; I was so shocked that I wasn’t able to shout HIT! Nobody saw me leave the war zone that after the game was over everyone was looking for me only to find out that I was waiting in the neutral zone for 5 minutes already. =)

PopularAirsoft: By the way, why "Mrs Smith" as your callsign in airsoft?

Allaine: My boyfriend and I always play together with the team Los Pistoleros. They were the one who named us Mr. and Mrs. Smith. From then on, we used it as our callsign. I think it is very catchy and easy to remember. It also discourages any other guy who thinks he can get lucky. =)

PopularAirsoft: Do you want to mention about your boyfriend?

Allaine: Yes. His name is Carlo Tomimbang and he's not just my boyfriend coz we're engaged. He proposed last april at a beach in La union. He’s the reason why I got into airsoft. He’s also the one who buys my airsoft stuffs since I’m currently unemployed. =)

PopularAirsoft: What airsoft event outside the Philippines would you like to join in and why?

Allaine: Probably the ASCS in Japan. It is one of Japan’s most awaited event and it is limited only to the first 600 registrants. You’re like one of the luckiest people alive if you could join that event considering that there are lots of airsofters who want to join that event.

PopularAirsoft: Would you encourage more women to take up airsoft? What would you say to them?

Allaine: Yes. Airsoft is not only a gentleman’s game. It is also a game for the ladies. To all the women out there, let’s show them what GIRL POWER is all about. Airsoft is not about how big and strong you are. Its about how smart you are and how well you communicate with your team. It’s also not how big your gun is, its how you use it.

PopularAirsoft: Anything else that you would want to share to the Popularairsoft.com readers?

Allaine: We should always remember that airsoft should be for fun and not for hurting others. And Safety first, because no one wants a trip to… THE MEDIC! =)

Editor's Note: I wonder if she always asks her boyfriend, "Who's your Daddy now?"
