ASGI's Left 4 Dead: Fan Film Or A One Long Commercial?

Logan

We're pretty much sure that a great portion of our readers have already watched Airsoft GI's Left 4 Dead Fan Film after it got released last 16 December. The trailer was a good promotional tool as it went viral from there and the anticipation of nicely made viral fan film just went off the charts. Even here at Popular Airsoft, the guys waited to see how this film pans out, especially if it was produced by Airsoft GI, a well-known US Airsoft company in itself.

"Airsoft GI - Left 4 Dead - Impulse 76 Fan Film", which was made by Northern Five Entertainment started out really well. The setting must have been right after The Sacrifice Campaign with Louis, Zoey, and Francis getting a transmission over public broadcast of a fishing vessel near the shore that is looking for survivors that they can take in. The trio will had to fight it out with Zoey taking point. The action immediately starts when Louis kicks the door for them to fight through their way to the fishing boat.

They initially overpower a few infecteds waiting outside their hideout and slip into a warehouse, which for any airsoft player, would notice it's an airsoft warehouse, and definitely Airsoft GI's. A woman was crying in one of the aisles and as they try to assure her, she turns out to be another infected who goes after them. The trio go out into the open where they attracted the attention of a horde. The female infected grabs Louis and starts hacking him, while Francis and Zoey cannot make their minds up whether to shoot Louis' attacker or the fast arriving horde. After a moment of hesitation, they decided to shoot at the horde, leaving Louis to fend for himself as he lay helpless on the concrete.

In the midst of impending doom, the trio get some help from unexpected characters --- and everything just went downhill from there. For almost three minutes, it's just total incomprehension for us. Video gamers may love to see the reinforcing characters appearing on the last part of the film, but for fans wanting to see a good fan film about Left 4 Dead may have been let down. The story made a good start, but at the end, it didn't make sense at all.

Airsoft GI states that this is a non-profit, for fun fan film, but some think that this is more of a commercial for the company if you see beyond the film's description.  Perhaps this is to skirt any copyright infringement as the Left 4 Dead title is owned by another company. With the expenses made into this Fan Film, which can be more obvious with the behind the scenes footage, that this is beyond the budget of an amateur making a fan film for a beloved video game that one will wonder if the investment can be recouped by Airsoft GI through brand exposure of the company via YouTube.

What would your reckon of it? Our main critique of the short film is in agreement with a good number of people who would have preferred that the plot stayed true to the game story, rather than messing up at the end with characters just for the sake of putting them in and having a blaze of glory firefight. The story all has the markings of a thrilling short fan film that would have set the standard for the next generation of fan films. But then, it was just ruined putting all of these video game characters. They might as well have asked all these video game publishers and console makers to chip-in and help defray the costs of making the film and make some profit out of it.

This fan film can redeem itself if the last part can be re-written and re-shot to make it more faithful to the video game plot. It'll just cost time and money though.
