This semi-automatic pistol, chambered in the widely adopted 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, derives its nomenclature from the Croatian national animal, the European Pine Marten, a creature recognized for its agility, compact stature, and inherent capabilities.

Kuna's design uses a roller-delayed blowback operating system, a mechanical configuration that distinguishes it from more prevalent direct blowback mechanisms. This offers an advantage in mitigating recoil and enhancing accuracy by introducing a temporal delay in the bolt's rearward movement. This delay, achieved through a meticulously engineered roller mechanism, allows for a more complete dissipation of chamber pressure before the bolt unlocks. Consequently, this results in a smoother recoil impulse and improved operator control during rapid-fire sequences, a crucial attribute in dynamic tactical scenarios. This contrasts significantly with traditional blowback systems, which rely solely on the bolt's inertia and the recoil spring's resistance to manage the forces generated during firing.

The Kuna features a monolithic aluminum upper receiver, featuring strategically placed M-Lok slots, provides a rigid foundation for the attachment of a diverse range of tactical accessories, including illumination devices, laser aiming modules, and vertical foregrips. Springfield Armory offers the Kuna in two primary configurations. The standard pistol variant (KN9069B) presents a compact yet potent package. For users prioritizing enhanced stability and operational flexibility, the deluxe version (KN9069B-FSA) incorporates a Strike Industries side-folding stabilizing brace. The substantial magazine capacity, offering either 30 or 31 rounds, underscores the pistol's suitability for tactical applications and situations needing a high volume of available ammunition. The Kuna was selected by the São Paulo Military Police (PMESP) in Brazil last year. Reports indicate that the Kuna outperformed established competitors, including the B&T APC40 and Steyr M40, in rigorous evaluation trials, highlighting its reliability and performance under demanding operational conditions.
