When the notorious Canadian sniper, Wali (not his real name), traveled to Ukraine as a volunteer in the international legion fighting, the Russians claimed that they were able to kill him, branding him as the “deadliest sniper in the world” for propaganda purposes, he was able to survive and is now back home.
As for the sniper rifle that he brought with him to the frontlines, it was a Sako TRG 42.
Sako, the Finnish firearms company owned by Beretta, gets to supply Canada Army by bagging the Multi Calibre Sniper Weapon (MCSW) contract with the Sako TRG M10, a bolt-action sniper rifle with a magazine-fed system.. It won the contract after going rigorous and extensive testing, passing all of the tests as proof that it is one of the world’s best at making precision shooting rifles.
Announced in 2011, the TRG M10, whilst it is part of the TRG family, is a configurable multi calibre modular system that does not share a good number of features from the other TRG rifles, including the receiver. It can be reconfigured by changing the bolts, magazines, forends and barrels to fire the .308 Winchester (7.62×51mm NATO), .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum rounds for military and law enforcement use. The handguard sports the M-Lok rail system with a side folding buttstock and an aluminium middle chassis frame.
For a country that produces some of the best snipers in the world, with a member of the JTF-2 holding the world record at the longest distance for a kill at 3,540 metres (3,871 yards) during the Iraq War in 2017, its seal of approval for a Sako sniper rifle will go a long way. Canada joins Poland and South Korea as users of the Sako TRG M10.
