As the song always goes, “I fought the law, and law won.” It’s worse if one goes up against police detectives with a non-lethal gun such as pepper or airsoft gun, it’s absolutely no contest at all. But the worst thing is that it always happens into the death of the person holding the non-lethal gun.

The CBS reports that New York Police Department (NYPD) detectives shot and killed a man in the Bronx after pulling an airsoft gun on them. The detectives were in the area for an unrelated investigation when they overheard a dispute with one man saying he was going to his black Ford pickup truck to get his gun. His description was then sent out to units in the area.

A detective then approached the man announcing that he is a police officer and ordering the man not to move. Instead of following the order, the man fired his gun missing the detective the officers on the scene immediately returned fire hitting him five times. The suspect was brought to Lincoln Hospital where he died from his wounds.

According to the police, the man pointed a Byrna HD airsoft pistol. However, it seems they have mistaken it for an airsoft pistol since it is a CO2-powered pistol. Instead it is a pepper pistol, used as a non-lethal home defense weapon. It is actually been replaced by the Byrna SD (Self Defense) pistol and it shoots .67 kinetic or chemical irritant projectiles.

No matter what, if officers of the law order you to surrender a weapon, even it is a non-deadly pepper or airsoft gun, you have to follow the order. This is what we often advise to those who get questioned by police officers whilst transporting airsoft guns on their way to or from an airsoft game, even if these are stored in gun bags. It will be a tense moment when police won’t be able to distinguish a replica gun from the real thing and just following their orders will lessen that and come to an understanding. In the end, you will be get home safely and still get to keep your replica gun.
