Kimber’s latest addition to the R7 family, the R7 Mako Carbon Compact, is a standout in the world of everyday carry (EDC) firearms. This pistol boasts a completely redesigned frame made from a carbon fibre-infused matrix, offering superior durability with a tensile strength of up to 60,000 psi. It’s engineered to meet the needs of modern EDC firearms owners, combining strength and functionality.
The frame of the Kimber R7 Mako Carbon Compact has been meticulously redesigned from the ground up. Utilizing a carbon fibre-infused matrix, it ensures lasting durability in any environment. The moulded stippling provides a secure grip without being overly abrasive, making it ideal for a carry gun. Additionally, the flared magwell facilitates quicker reloading of the two included 15-round magazines, and the forward accessory rail supports the attachment of light or laser modules.
The black FNC-finished, stainless steel slide is a lengthened variant of the original R7 Mako design. The frame enhancements include improved ergonomics, moulded stipplings, a flared magazine well, and ambidextrous controls such as the magazine catch, slide stop, and disassembly lever. These features collectively enhance the pistol’s usability and performance.
A notable feature is the aggressive undercut of the trigger guard where it meets the front strap. This design allows shooters to establish a solid grip, providing better control over the pistol. The R7 Mako Carbon Compact is also equipped with a competition-grade trigger, further enhancing its performance. With a 3.9-inch barrel and a standard magazine capacity of 15 rounds, this model is designed for efficiency and reliability. The TFS model features a threaded barrel and a factory-installed Holosun 407K red-dot sight.
The Kimber R7 Mako Carbon Compact is available in four different models with the basic model, which is optics-ready and features a 3.9-inch barrel, priced at $735. The 3.9-inch OI (Optics Included) model, which comes with a Holosun HS 407K already installed, is available for $995. The optics-ready TFS version, featuring an extended 4.42-inch threaded barrel, is priced at $795. Lastly, the TFS OI version, which includes both the threaded barrel and a Holosun HS 407K, is available for $1,080.
The frame of the Kimber R7 Mako Carbon Compact is constructed from a carbon fibre-infused polymer matrix, boasting an impressive tensile strength of 60,000 lbs PSI (approximately 413 MPa). Each pistol comes with four interchangeable grip backstraps and two 15-round double-stack magazines, ensuring versatility and customization for the user.
All models are optics-ready from the factory, compatible with Shield RSMc/Holosun K footprint micro red dot sights. They also come equipped with TruGlo Tritium Pro night sights, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions.
The baseline model measures 177 mm (7 inches) in overall length, features a 9.9 cm (3.9-inch) barrel, and weighs 691 grams (24.4 oz) without a magazine. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price starts at $735 on the US market, making it a competitive option for those seeking a reliable and durable EDC pistol.
