Specna Arms SA-H20 EDGE 2.0 AEG Review

The HK416 assault rifle is one of the most popular and sought after replicas among airsofters. For this reason, most airsoft companies and manufacturers have released versions of this rifle both with long barrels and CQB versions.

The SA-H20 is Specna Arms’ take  on the HK416 and Gunfire have kindly sent us a sample to have a look at.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Specna Arms SA-H20 EDGE 2.0 AEG Review 02

The SA-H20 came in the standard Specna Arms box, with the rifle well secured inside the box with foam. The package comes with the rifle, 2x mid-cap magazines, and extra M90 spring, a front vertical grip and some documents.

On picking up the rifle the first thing I noticed is, unfortunately, a very wobbly stock and a loose buffer tube which both are really an easy fix. Once I’ve tightened the buffer tube, I went to have a closer look at the rifle.

The SA-H20 is a very well-built and solid airsoft replica. Specna Arms have done a great job in building a very faithful replica of the original weapon. The AEG has a very good weight to it and most of it is metal apart from the grip and stock.

From the front, the rifle has a standard bird cage style flash finder. Behind the flash hider are two sling loops, one on each side. The front RIS is also made of metal and has rails on all four sides. The vertical foregrip that came with the pack attaches well to the lower rail. It has a standard H&K –style front and rear sight which can be removed if the user prefers to. The connection between the RIS top rail and the upper receiver rail is almost flat and continuous. There was a slight movement on the front RIS but was easily sorted out by tightening the screw that holds it in place. The outer barrel is the short version and is attached solidly with no obvious movement. One thing I have a small issue with is the corners on all the ends of the rails are quite pointy and sharp. A few time I’ve caught my fingers on one of these and felt quite painful but no harm done.

The top and lower receivers come perfectly together. No movement between them. The dust cover is metal and flips open when the charging handle is pulled and also pulls back the fake bolt that gives access to the rotary hop-up adjustment assembly. The hop-up unit is plastic and adjusts easily. The fake bolt holds back in place which makes it easier for the hop-up to be adjusted. It has a working bolt release catch which releases the fake bolt back in place.

One of the first things I normally check in an airsoft AR style rifle is the fire selector switch. 9 out of 10, if you have a fire selector that cycles smoothly and clicks well in place, you will have a good replica. And this one did not disappoint me. The fire selector cycles smoothly and clicks in place really good. Trigger pull is smooth. There is no, what I call, “locked on safety” feeling on the trigger due to the MOSFET installed. So without the battery, the trigger feels the same on all fire modes.

The pistol grip is H&K style which some players have complained of it being a bit big and bulky but I personally have no problems with the ergonomics and actually find it comfortable. The texturing helps with gripping but it is not too rough.

There is a rear sling attachment between the buffer tube and receiver with another pair on the top rear of the stock.

The buffer tube needed a bit of tightening when I got the rifle out of the box. The castle nut was loosened hence the reason for the tube wobble. The plastic stock had a really bad wobble but then again it is an easy and quick fix. The buffer tube is hollow and functions as a battery housing. The wiring comes out through the buffer tube and this rifle comes with T connectors or more commonly known as Deans connectors. To access the battery compartment you can either remove the stock completely or open the butt end by twisting it counter clockwise. The butt stock can also be completely detached for better access to the battery compartment.

The package comes with 2 mid-cap Specna Arms style plastic magazines. Having 2 in a package comes in handy as it makes the rifle game ready out of the box. Some users have reported some issues with the mags having soft springs that cause them to misfeed after a few times being used but so far I haven’t had that experience with these magazines.

INTERNALS

The SA-H20 comes with very good quality internals which are now standard to the Specna Arms EDGE 2.0 series. The rifle has a tight bore 6.03mm inner barrel which should add to both the accuracy and range.

The SA-H20 being a EDGE 2.0 series comes with a preinstalled GATE Aster MOSFET that is fully programmable. I would suggest, based on my experience with these rifles, to update the firmware before using. The rifle doesn’t come with a USB cable but does come with a program card which shows how the MOSFET can be programmed using its trigger.

Connecting the MOSFET to a computer allows the firmware to be updated to the latest version and shows all the features that can be programmed to the user’s specific needs. Some of these features are battery protection, active brake, cycle detection and trigger calibration. It also features an ammo limit wherein the user can set the ammo capacity to a certain number, let’s say 30 BBs. The Aster MOSFET also has burst fire functionality from 3 or 5 shot bursts. It also has a semi-lock feature which locks the full auto mode to semi. This is very handy for DMR users as long as the site would allow them to use this feature.

Another cool feature of the rifle is its quick spring swap capability. Most Specna Arms replicas have this feature but the assembly on the SA-H20 is a bit different from the other Specna Arms I have seen. For one, the buffer tube is held in place only by the castle nut. No long screw and plate through the inside of the tube and gearbox. Once the castle nut is undone, twist the buffer tube to one direction to completely pull it off. Underneath, unscrew the top metal assembly. This acts as the spring guide. Once removed, the spring can be pulled out and changed.

SHOOTING EXPERIENCE

This is the second Specna Arms Edge with a GATE Aster MOSFET that I have tried and I love the way they shoot. The trigger pull is very smooth. The only thing with MOSFET controlled triggers is that you don’t feel that point where the trigger is about to engage and fire. The trigger pull is the same with all three fire modes.

ROF or Rate Of Fire can be set or programmed, semi auto shooting is great as there is no misfire no matter how quick you try and pull the trigger. The burst modes are an added bonus although I personally am not a big fan of them.

Specna Arms SA-H20 EDGE 2.0 AEG Review 33

The only issue I have in shooting the SA-H20 is the hop-up. On both springs supplied, the hop doesn’t seem to lift the BBs as good as would want it to. I was using 0.30g BBs when I test fired the rifle and the BBs were dropping at around 30-metre distance even on full hop. It was as if the hop-up was not adjusting at all. This will be an easy fix anyway to players who know their way around the internals of an AEG. It may even benefit a hop-up unit upgrade.

CONCLUSION

The SA-H20 2.0 is another great replica from Specna Arms. It’s not perfect but all of the issues that I found on this unit are all pretty easy to fix.

The GATE Aster MOSFET is a great bonus on this considering its price range. I even found a UK site selling it for under £200.

I would say that this would be a really good starter unit for new players but it is also a great primary for seasoned veterans or an ideal back up weapon.

Big thanks to Specna Arms and Gunfire for sending me this unit for testing.
