DJI, a renowned leader in consumer drones, has been making significant strides in the action camera market with its Osmo Action series. While GoPro has long dominated this segment, DJI's latest offering, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, is poised to challenge its supremacy.
One of the standout features of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is its upgraded sensor. Although the same size as its predecessor, the new sensor boasts a higher resolution of 40 megapixels, allowing for stunning still images. While video remains at 4K, the improved resolution is a substantial leap forward. Notably, DJI has emphasized the sensor's exceptional dynamic range, claiming it rivals larger mirrorless cameras.
To complement the enhanced sensor, DJI has equipped the Osmo Action 5 Pro with a wide-angle F2.8 lens and a closer focusing distance. This combination ensures sharp and detailed footage in various shooting scenarios.
The camera's video capabilities are equally impressive. It can capture 4:3 4K footage at 120fps, a feature previously limited to 16:9 aspect ratio on the Osmo Action 4. Additionally, the camera excels in low-light conditions, thanks to its improved dynamic range and ability to shoot up to 4K 60fps in low-light environments.
For even more challenging lighting conditions, the Osmo Action 5 Pro offers a SuperNight mode. This mode utilizes AI noise reduction algorithms to capture high-quality footage in extremely low-light environments.
In terms of functionality, DJI has introduced a subject tracking mode to the Osmo Action 5 Pro. This feature, similar to those found in vlogging-focused cameras, allows the camera to automatically detect and track a subject, keeping it centered in the frame.
Beyond the sensor and subject tracking, the Osmo Action 5 Pro offers several other enhancements. The battery life has been significantly improved, providing up to 4 hours of continuous use. The camera's size and weight remain compact, making it easy to carry and use.
The camera’s built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable support for the DJI Mic 2, along with Livestream capabilities. You can also edit footage directly from your smartphone using the Mimo app. The app now features updates that allow for three-second live photo captures and the ability to extract frames from 4K video.
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is available for $349 with the Standard Combo, which includes lens protectors and quick-release adapters. Alternatively, you can opt for the $449 Adventure Combo, which comes with a mini quick-release adapter, a multi-functional battery case, and an extension rod. Depending on your specific action and content creation needs, you can choose the combo package that best suits you.
With its impressive combination of features, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is a compelling option for action camera enthusiasts. Its upgraded sensor, enhanced video capabilities, and versatile features make it a strongest contender to challenge GoPro's dominance in the market, going head to head against the recently released GoPro Hero 13 Black.
