The Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency (NDMA) has taken another step in modernizing its military capabilities by contracting Barrett Firearms Manufacturing to upgrade its Barrett Model 82A1 rifles, originally fielded in 1999, to the more advanced M107A1. In a press release, Barrett CEO Bryan James expressed his pride in continuing the partnership with the Norwegian Armed Forces, emphasizing the M107A1’s embodiment of precision, reliability, and innovation. The Norwegian military's long-range firepower has been significantly enhanced through this upgrade.

This decision to update the aging sniper arsenal is part of Norway’s broader effort to enhance its military and defense capabilities. The Barrett M82, a recoil-operated, semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle, has been a staple in the U.S. military, known as the SASR — “Special Applications Scoped Rifle.” The M82A1, also called the Light Fifty due to its .50 BMG 12.7×99mm NATO cartridge, has been used for both anti-materiel and anti-personnel purposes. The M82 series includes the original M82A1, the bullpup M82A2, and the M107A1, with the latter featuring a muzzle brake designed to accept a suppressor and made from titanium.

The Barrett M107 is a .50 caliber, shoulder-fired, semi-automatic sniper rifle that incorporates several enhancements over the original M82A1. These improvements include a lengthened accessory rail, rear grip, and monopod socket. The M107A1's high-powered optics significantly improve the targeting abilities and situational awareness of soldiers. Despite its iconic look, the M107A1 is a product of state-of-the-art design and materials, making it lighter and stronger than its predecessors. The rifle’s 4-pound weight reduction and optimization for use with a sound suppressor offer significant advantages in the field.

The NDMA’s contract with Barrett underscores its confidence in the company’s ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions that meet the rigorous demands of military use. The M107A1 will significantly enhance the Norwegian Armed Forces’ ability to engage targets at extreme ranges, providing a tactical edge on the battlefield.

Barrett’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement is evident in its partnerships with allied nations worldwide. CEO Bryan James highlighted the shared dedication to excellence and the company’s long history in the field, expressing optimism about growing relationships with international partners.

Barrett Firearms is renowned globally for its expertise in long-range, large-caliber, precision rifle design and manufacturing. Its products are widely used by civilians, sport shooters, law enforcement agencies, the U.S. military, and over 80 U.S. Department of State-approved countries.

In January 2023, Australian defense contractor NOIA acquired Barrett. Despite the change in ownership, all management and staff at Barrett’s Murfreesboro, TN, manufacturing facility were retained, and production continues in the United States.

According to the company, this acquisition has not altered its commitment to innovation and quality, ensuring that its products remain at the forefront of precision rifle technology. The partnership with NOIA is expected to further strengthen Barrett’s position in the global defense market.
