Casio Unveils Another Rugged Smartwatch: The Pro Trek WSD-F20

Casio is still committed to the smartwatch, even if the releases of new smartwatches in the past months have been more subdued as compared to the fanfare when the first generation of Android Wear and iWatches were released. At the CES 2017, they unveiled the Pro Trek WSD-F20, a follow up on the Pro Trek WSD-F10.

A quick look at the WSD-F20 and you’ll not find any big differences from the WSD-F10, but inside, they have added a low-power GPS and is one of the first smartwatches to use Android Wear 2.0. The Casio WSD F-10 did not have a built-in GPS and uses the smartphone’s GPS instead.

For outdoors people, including us airsoft players, we would welcome the GPS built in the WSD-F20 as you can download color maps with it and can connect to the American GPS and Japanese “MICHIBIKI” QZSS global positioning systems with the Russian GLONASS to be added soon. Since the color maps can be displayed for offline viewing on the WSD-F20, one can navigate outdoors even if there is no signal available for the smartphone.

What’s even better with the GPS feature is that it can display footprints of route taken on the map as well as record markers and make notes by using voice inputs.
The watch is 56.4mm which is bulky for those not used to wearing Casio G-Shock watches but is 1 gram lighter than the WSD-F10. As for the touch screen, the size is the same as WSD-F10 at 1.32 inch with a 300 x 320 pixel resolution.

Since it is a hybrid Android Wear smartwatch, it has a dual-layer LCD with superimposed monochrome and color LCDs. The time is measured with the monochrome LCD, allowing it to turn off the Android Wear functions and use basic timekeeping and run for a month before battery juice runs out, making it one the most battery efficient smartwatches in the market through more frequent use of the Android Wear functions would lessen battery life. The color LCD is devoted for the Android wear features such as the GPS as well as showing notifications.

The Casio Pro Trek WSD-F20 will be released on the 21st of April 2017 with an MSRP of US$500.  As for WSD-F10 winners, rest assured that their smartwartch will soon be almost up to par its newer sibling as it will be updated with Android 2.0.
